This is one of the most common issues refrigerator owners face: the appliance turns on, the light works, but there’s no cooling. At first glance, everything seems fine – but the food is spoiling and the interior is warm. Why does this happen, and what should you do?

Faulty Compressor

The compressor is the “heart” of your fridge. If it doesn’t start or runs only briefly and shuts off, the refrigerator won’t cool. Signs of the issue:
  • Silence from the back panel (no humming);
  • Compressor is very hot;
  • Turns on for a few seconds and then off again.
Possible causes:
  • Worn-out motor;
  • Faulty start relay;
  • Voltage drops in the power supply.
What to do? A technician should diagnose the issue — this may require replacing the relay or compressor (if the motor has burned out).

Freon Leak

Freon is the refrigerant circulating in the system that provides cooling. Over time or due to mechanical damage to the tubing, leaks can occur. Signs:
  • Light is on, compressor is running, but the fridge is warm;
  • Freezer is warmer than usual;
  • Back panel is dry and not cold.
What to do? The leak needs to be located, the pipe sealed, and the system recharged with Freon. This is a job for a qualified technician only.

Faulty Thermostat or Control Board

Modern refrigerators (especially LG, Samsung, Whirlpool) are controlled electronically. If the thermostat sensor or control board fails, the compressor won’t receive the signal to turn on. Signs:
  • Fridge looks “alive” but doesn’t cool;
  • Display or buttons may not respond;
  • Compressor won’t start for no visible reason.
What to do? Check the electronics, test the board, or replace the sensor. Some models may require firmware updates.

Fan Issues (in No Frost models)

In No Frost systems, a fan circulates cold air between compartments. If it’s broken, the cold air won’t reach the food. Signs:
  • Freezer works but fridge section does not;
  • Clicking sounds are heard, but no airflow;
  • Uneven temperatures inside.
What to do? Fan replacement or defrosting may be required if it’s frozen.

Clogged Drain System or Ice Block

In No Frost models, ice blockages in the air ducts can obstruct airflow. Signs:
  • Fan makes noise, but the air isn’t cold;
  • Unusual sounds or periodic buzzing;
  • Water pooling under drawers or frost build-up.
What to do? A full defrost (12–24 hours) may help temporarily. But if the issue persists, call a technician.

What NOT to do yourself:

  • Don’t open the case and try to “tinker” inside;
  • Don’t attempt to refill Freon on your own;
  • Don’t short wires or try to “click something” to make it work.
This isn’t just ineffective – it’s dangerous. Modern refrigerators require precise diagnostics.

When should you call a technician?

  • If the light is on but the fridge doesn’t cool at all;
  • If you hear clicking or buzzing, but the temperature stays the same;
  • If it still doesn’t work after defrosting.
