Why the refrigerator does not turn off: the most common reasons

The thermostat or temperature sensor is responsible for shutting down the unit, so it is the first among the potential culprits.

Malfunction of the thermostat or incorrect setting

Do not mindlessly adjust the operation of the refrigerator. After setting the lowest possible degrees, the unit will not turn off for a long time. Especially if it is stuffed under a tie.   A refrigerator without electronics has a thermostat, a device that periodically opens and closes the power circuit, de-energizing and re-energizing the motor compressor. In the event of a malfunction of the thermostat, the engine runs continuously and freezes strongly. If the thermostat malfunctions, it must be replaced. After eliminating the malfunction, pay attention to how long it took for the refrigerator to turn off, everything should be within the normal range.

Refrigerant leak

In the case of a small leak, freon can escape for several weeks. At the same time, the refrigerator continues to work. The pressure in the system drops, and the motor has to work without turning off to reach the required temperature, but it still fails to reach the required degrees. The temperature in the refrigerator does not correspond to the appropriate level.   The loss of freon can be detected by an oil stain on the tube, and the formation of ice outside, near the compressor. However, in order to accurately answer the question of why the refrigerator does not want to turn off, you will most likely have to invite a specialist. In the event of a freon leak, you will not be able to fix the problem yourself. It will be necessary to find the place of exit of the refrigerant, seal the breach and fill the system again.

Heat sources are nearby

It happens that the refrigerator does not work properly immediately after installation. It should be located near heat sources: powerful heating radiators, fireplaces, gas stoves, etc. All this equipment heats the body of the unit. The walls of the refrigerator, of course, have thermal insulation, but you should not heat it from the outside. This can be an additional reason that, together with other circumstances, prevents the device from turning off.

Problems with the door seal

Over time, the seal is deformed, and the door does not close tightly. Warm air from the room enters inside, which prevents the cooling of products. As a result, the refrigerator works for a long time and does not want to turn off. You can check the seal by leaving a flashlight inside at night. If a strip of light comes from the case, then the rubber band does not provide proper tightness. Straighten the slightly deformed seal yourself. For this:   – defrost the refrigerator; – treat the gum with boiling water from a kettle, the lower part can be steamed from the nozzle of an iron; – straighten the seal; – Close the door for a couple of minutes to equalize the thickness of the rubber band.

Compressor failure

The worst option is a compressor malfunction. If all the above-mentioned malfunctions do not apply to your case, it remains to sin on the heart of the refrigerator. Problems with it occur after long-term use or in case of a factory defect. Replacing the compressor is an expensive procedure that requires a professional approach. If there are problems with a budget unit, you can check the part with a multimeter: ring both windings, add their supports, and compare the value obtained with that given by two parallel pins. We should get about the same.   Why can the refrigerator still not turn off? Let’s add a couple of points to the above:   The tubes through which freon circulates are clogged.   Defective control board. For refrigerators that are not equipped with electronics, the root cause of the malfunction may be the thermostat. For more advanced devices, there is a thermal sensor that sends a signal to the board. If it breaks, you won’t have to spend much. Worse — when the board burned.   If the unit does not turn off, do not delay the repair: overloading the compressor can cause it to fail.     It’s time to call for professional appliance repair in San Diego County.
