Bosch washing machines have a reputation for being the most reliable washing machines available. That’s partly true, with German technology, innovative features, and cutting-edge capabilities, it’s all very appealing in the eyes of the consumer. But to call a Bosch washing machine completely invulnerable and immune to breakdowns would be wrong. Even the most popular and expensive washing machines have a chance of breaking down.
In some cases, the washing machine itself can help simplify the search for the root cause of the fault – an error code or breakdown appears on the display.
Most modern Bosch washing machines are fitted with a brushless motor and manufactured using proprietary technology. This is called the EcoSilence Drive motor. But if you bought your washing machine some time ago, its motor may still be a commutator motor with brushes.
In this case, it is highly probable that the brushes have worn out over time and the torque is not transmitted to the drum by the motor so the washing machine is unable to start the washing program. The most probable cause is if, immediately before the malfunction, you noticed that the drum was rotating unsteadily – it was intermittent, slower than usual or the washer-dryer could not spin.
The solution to this problem is to replace the old worn brushes with new ones. It is necessary to unscrew the rear cover of the housing, disconnect the motor from the loops and contacts, unscrew the fixing screws and remove it from the housing. The old brushes cannot be repaired, so they will have to be completely replaced with new ones.
A similar breakdown may well occur if the Bosch washing machine is fitted with a brushless motor. Then attention should be paid to the starting capacitor, it is likely to be the one that has failed.
If the washing machine is used heavily, e.g. in commercial use, the motor may overheat and should be left to cool down for a few hours.
The drive belt is broken or has come off
Bosch washing machines do not use the direct motor technology located on the drum axis, they all have a drive belt in their design. So, if your washing machine has suddenly stopped running the washing program, a broken belt could well be the cause. In this case, water may be drawn into the tank.
The belt can break or come off for various reasons. For example, the washing machine has been running with an overloaded drum for some time, the bearings have worn out, and the laundry has been loaded into the drum unevenly which has created an imbalance.
If before the breakage you could observe that the drum would rotate unstably – it would spin, but it could not reach the high spinning speed – it means that the belt was stretched, and now it is broken or has broken off completely.
To restore the washing machine to working order, we will need a new drive belt, which will match the model of the washing machine. To replace the old one, you will need to unscrew the fastening screws on the back of the housing and set it aside. Already now we can see the faulty belt.
We remove it and install the new one. First, put it on the motor shaft and then gently spread it over the drum pulley, turning it slowly. This is a fairly simple washing machine repair that you can do yourself.
Worn or destroyed bearings
The inability to rotate the drum, and accordingly, the inability to start the washing cycle after filling the tank with water can lead to wear or destruction of the bearing unit. If the drum refuses to rotate at all, it is likely that you have delayed the repair of your Bosch washing machine too long. Before stopping completely, you may have observed unnaturally high vibrations as the drum spins, which creates an accompanying noise, hum, and crackle.
It is worth noting that if your Bosch washing machine (and others too) has begun to show signs of bearing wear, it should be replaced immediately, ignoring the breakdown, the manifestations (vibrations and noise) will become stronger until the drum stops at all. In addition, bearing failure may cause other malfunctions such as drive belt breakage or drum axle malfunction.
The entire bearing unit must be replaced – the two bearings and the oil seal. To carry out the replacement, the tank and drum must be removed from the housing. To do this, the washing machine has to be disassembled almost completely. But the main problem is that after replacing it, it has to be put back together – this is more complicated than disassembling it.
The bearings need to be selected specifically for the model of the washing machine being repaired. Repairs of this nature and complexity are best entrusted to an experienced San Diego Appliance Repair Service, it is not advisable to do a complete disassembly of the washing machine yourself.
