The smart housekeeper makes sure that maintenance tasks get included in the daily routine. Here are some that you should make a part of your routine, if you want to prolong the length of your dishwasher’s and microwave’s life.
Tasks that Work to Maintain a Microwave Oven
If that appliance has been producing microwaves for 10 to 15 years, you ought to check its output efficiency. Put an 8 ounce cup of water in the oven and turn it on high, and keep it there for 3 minutes. Then turn it off. See if the water has started to boil. If it has, then you can feel confident of the oven’s possession of an adequate level of efficiency.
The test for radiation leakage is not something that you can do. You will need to hire an expert, if you want to follow-through with completion of your maintenance routine. Make sure that the expert finds your microwave in a safe spot.Do not put the microwave on an overworked circuit. If possible, see that it gets placed on a separate circuit. Try to keep it clean; use a damp sponge to wipe off spills.
Tasks that Help to Maintain a Dishwasher
Limit the amount of soap used for each load. One tablespoon of soap should do an effective job of cleaning the dishes. Make certain that nothing besides dishes and glassware get placed in the dishwasher. Guard against introduction of objects such as dirty tools, clothes, sneakers or greasy range hood filters.
If possible, get hold of some citric acid crystals. They should help you to remove unwanted dirt from the dishwasher’s interior. When the appliance is empty, put the crystals in the soap cup. Then run the machine through a full cycle.
If you cannot find a source of citric acid crystals, purchase a suitable substitute. At a supermarket, you should be able to choose between two different substitutes. One is the drinking powder called Tang; the other is a standard lemonade mix. Be sure not to fill the soap cup, if you must use one of the two substitutes for the citric acid crystals.
Besides working as a cleaning product, the crystals can be used to prevent formation of dirt on the interior surface of the dishwasher. Add 1 teaspoon of the acid crystals to the soap once per week. While you work to keep dirt out of your dishwasher’s interior, you should also stave off formation of soap buildup, within that same space. You can accomplish that by wiping the seals on the door.
