Step 1 – Troubleshoot the Drains

Before you get wrist-deep in dishwasher parts, check if your drain is clogged. Peer into the garbage compactor or unscrew the pipe running beneath it to see if there are any food blockages. If there are, you may have solved your problem. Knock out the blockage and see if your problem stops.

Step 2 – Disassembling the Dishwasher

If the drains and pipes look clear, it’s time to delve deeper into your dishwasher. Remove the racks. The top rack may be held in place by a small clip on the left and right sides. Remove these with a screwdriver or butter knife and the rack should slide out. Before you start removing screws, lay a dishcloth down along the bottom of your dishwasher compartment. This will save you a lot of hassle that would arise if you dropped a screw or two into the bottom. Remove the screws in the back and top of your dishwasher. The lower sprayer comes out by unscrewing the middle screw. Once removed, you’ll be able to lift the top cover away. You should have 4 more screws to remove. Typically, 3 are visible, and 1 will be hidden by the sprayer arm. When removing the sprayer arm, be sure to keep the plastic O-ring set aside for later. Don’t lose it! With the arm and the screw it was hiding removed, the plug and filter should lift right out. From here, you should be able to spot any issues.
