Kenmore Elite washing machines are generally made sturdy and able to handle the job that they’ve been designed to do. Still, a washing machine isn’t unbreakable and is built with limitations. This means that if you use it improperly or don’t complete even basic maintenance, you’ll end up damaging your Kenmore Elite washing machine. The trick to making your machine last as long as possible is to avoid common washing machine mistakes that can shorten its lifespan.
Taking the steps to take care of your washing machine will save you money in repair costs since you won’t have to call in an appliance repair technician in San Diego County as often. Plus you won’t have to replace the machine as early as you may have, if you don’t take the steps to take care of it.
Empty Those Pockets!
We’ve all done it. We’re in such a hurry to get that load of laundry into the machine that we don’t bother to double check to make sure all the contents from all the pockets have been removed. Any type of non-clothing object can do bad things to your washing machine when it gets stuck in the water drain.
Wreaking havoc on your water drain doesn’t have to be done by something large. An item as small as a bobby pin can plug up your drain and make your washer work harder to get the job done that it’s designed to do. Gum is especially bad since it’s so sticky and really gums (no pun intended) things up. Plus if it gets on your clothes, it’s extremely difficult to get out.
Too Many Clothing
If you think you’re working at peak efficiency if you jam your washing machine to maximum capacity, you need to reconsider what you’re doing. Over stuffing your machine may mean you’ll get more clothing in on one load, but it also means that your machine needs to work much harder than it should in order to try to clean the clothes you’ve stuffed into it.
Clothes need room to agitate in order to get clean. If there’s so many in the appliance that there’s not much movement, you can’t expect that your clothing with come out very clean either. Another con of over stuffing your washing machine is that soap residue may not get properly rinsed off the drum. Too much soap residue encourages bacteria growth which can lead to mold and mildew growth.
Using Too Much Detergent
On the topic of soap residue, you’ll get the same problem if you use too much detergent. Not only will soap residue encourage bacteria growth, too much soap will make your clothing sudsy and stiff.
If you’re using a high efficiency washer, make sure you use detergent suitable for it. And remember that a high efficiency washer doesn’t require as much soap as a traditional washer to do the same level of cleaning.
Don’t Forget the Dispensers
Mold and mildew growth is not good for the finish of the drum or the inner workings of your Kenmore Elite washing machine. Residue build up can cause clogs. To avoid this, take a few moments after every load to wipe down the fabric softener and detergent dispensers.
