Let’s be real: with the luxury of owning a KitchenAid dishwasher, no one wants to handwash dishes. We get it. But you’d be surprised to find that many of the items you put through your dishwasher are actually quite unsafe for the appliance or the cooking tools themselves. You might find that after prolonged exposure, your dishwasher will suffer some long-term consequences from these dishwasher unsafe items.
Curious to see if you’re dishwasher-savvy? Read our blog below and see the 5 items you should not run through your KitchenAid dishwasher! These rules can apply to other dishwasher makes and models, too, so make sure to get informed on what is and isn’t safe in your dishwasher.
Knives
While some dull butter knives are fine to put into your dishwasher, we would advise you not to put any sharp knives used for chopping into your KitchenAid dishwasher. Sharp cutting knives can cause internal damage to the unit as the water pressure moves them around. The water pressure can also negate the quality of the knife, making it dull much more quickly than it should.
Crystal
This one should be obvious, but you’d be surprised by how many people throw their China or crystal in the dishwasher. Crystal can easily get chipped or cracked in your dishwasher, as the water pressure is too high for the thin, delicate build of crystal. Hand wash any expensive dishes to avoid unwanted damage.
Cast Iron Pans
Cast iron pans, sadly, are a little more stubborn in terms of cleaning in comparison to other pans. Because food really gets stuck on there, you will most likely need to hand wash and scrub your cast iron pans. Even if the food debris is not completely stuck on there, the weight of your cast iron can bend or damage the dish slots in your dishwasher.
Wooden Cooking Tools
Some wooden utensils are safe to put in the dishwasher; however, you should avoid putting them in your KitchenAid dishwasher unless they are clearly marked as safe by the manufacturer. Wood can warp in the dishwasher due to the extreme high heats, and can lose their finish as well.
Nonstick Pans
Most nonstick pans are not dishwasher safe, unless they are clearly marked as so. The reason it is unwise to put nonstick pans in your dishwasher is because the non-stick film is actually more sensitive than you think; after prolonged exposure to the water pressure in your dishwasher, it is likely that your nonstick film will begin to lose effectiveness. Handwashing is, usually, the only safe option for your pan.
