Irrespective of the model, whether it is a well-worn Samsung fridge, the unit will make noise during operation, since it contains moving elements. The motor with a crankshaft rotates, the crank with the compressor piston makes a reciprocating motion and the valves knock at actuation.   The volume increases in models equipped with the No Frost system due to the operation of the fans. Owners usually get so used to the sounds made by a normally working refrigeration unit that they do not notice them. But if it begins to remind of itself too noisily, it is necessary to understand why the refrigerator hums.   The maximum noise level produced by the refrigerator is limited by GOST to 55 decibels. That corresponds to the volume of a normal conversation. Manufacturers of modern units assure that they have reduced this value to 40 dB. When buying, you should read the contents of the label on the front. The top line shows the power consumption class, then the volume of the chambers, and at the very bottom the noise level in dB.

Incorrectly installed refrigerator

If your new refrigerator makes an obscene amount of noise, it means that it was not vertically and horizontally checked during installation. Therefore, the compressor shifts and starts to hit the tubes or metal elements of the case, making a grinding sound. A more melodious sound is produced when the case vibrates when one foot does not touch the floor.   To fix the problem, you need to use a water level to align the refrigerator vertically and horizontally. A simple string and a weight may be used instead of a compass. Then be sure to check newly how the feet stand on the floor and, if necessary, adjust their position so that the refrigerator does not wobble.

Insufficient air supply

The refrigerator requires good cooling of the condenser, which is ensured by the inflow of cold air. If the unit is pushed against the wall and the furniture is squeezed in on either side, the amount of incoming air is not sufficient to cool it. In such conditions, the load on the compressor increases and it starts humming loudly.   To eliminate the noise, it is enough to increase the distance to the wall to at least 20 cm, and move the furniture away from the side walls. If possible, it is desirable to increase the clearance between the bottom of the unit and the floor. Dust accumulated on the cooling grill interferes with cooling, so it should be removed periodically.

Loose compressor fasteners

If after checking and eliminating the above causes, the refrigerator is noisy as before, you should check if the compressor shock absorbers have loosened. In older models, steel wire springs were used as shock absorbers.   Their weakening leads to displacement of the compressor and its contact with the piping and housing, which resonate and increase the volume of noise. In modern models, the shock absorbers are made in the form of rubber gaskets, which can be crumpled or torn. After replacing the springs or gaskets the noise stops.   You should not be surprised why the refrigerator just brought from the store is noisy if the compressor mounting bolts were not unscrewed during installation. They serve for rigid fastening of the compressor during transportation, so that the pipes leading to it would not be torn and the case would not be beaten. For the elimination of noise, it is enough to unscrew them.

Fan malfunctions

This cause is typical for units that use No Frost technology, such as a Bosch or Stinol refrigerator. Some models are equipped with two fans (LG refrigerator, Indesit refrigerator). One provides air circulation in the freezer, and the second – is in the refrigerator chamber. Over time, the bearing grease dries up, the fan begins to vibrate and the refrigerator hums heavily. When the electric heater malfunctions, ice forms on the evaporator, and the blades get caught in it, making unpleasant sounds.   To get rid of ice on the evaporator – the refrigerator or one chamber (if the model with two cooling circuits) will have to defrost. The defrosting process should last at least 12 hours, even if the ice melts earlier. During this time, you can check the presence of oil in the bearings and add it if necessary.   It’s time to call for professional appliance repair in San Diego county.
