How to choose the right washing machine

How many things should be loaded into the washing machine? It seems to many that the answer is very simple. Each model has a large sticker indicating the maximum drum capacity. It can be 5-11 kg of laundry depending on the brand and year of manufacture of the equipment. Based on this, the owners of the machine think that this is the amount of laundry the washing machine is designed for. In fact, this is not the case in 9 out of 10 cases.

A STICKER FOR 6 KG IS NOT A VOLUME OF 6 KG.

Earlier in full-size machines (60 x 60), you could put 4-5 kg of cotton laundry. The fact is that all fabrics have different weights. Cotton is one of the heaviest. Maybe the problem is that we loaded things into the washing machine not from cotton, but from some other fabric?

Let’s now repeat the experiment with a number of washing machines from our service, in which we will load cotton bed linen. And let’s start with this professional model, which has a declared weight of 10 kg. Let’s take a pile of linen weighing exactly 10 kg and try to put it all in the selected Whirpool.

With a stretch, we loaded 10 kg into this professional Whirlpool model. Why with a stretch? Because although all the things fit, there was very little space left on top. It is quite possible that this will not be enough for normal washing. But, nevertheless, a pile of cotton laundry weighing 10 kg fit in there.

Now let’s check another washing machine. This time we choose LG, which is smaller than the professional model but also has a volume of 11 kg (as indicated by the manufacturer).

We again chose 10 kg of laundry and tried to push them into the LG washing machine. The result was not very encouraging. Things fit, but in fact, this volume was too much for the machine. The laundry was shoved to the top, there was practically no free space inside. When this drum rotates during washing, things will not be washed. It is possible that even some of them will just get wet with water. If soapy water remains between the clothes, it will not be rinsed out. Now let’s try to take out some things so that the load is more or less normal for this machine.

After we took out some of the laundries we got the following result: we got 3 kg 750 g. In fact, a little more than 6 kg of the declared 11 kg remained in the machine. A miserable result!

We move on to the next LG for 5 kg.

Again we loaded the laundry according to the rules. Out of the declared 5 kg, about 4 kg 400 g fit into the machine, which is very good. Let’s test another model.

Again we load things according to the rules (2/3 of the drum). We chose 4400 g of cotton and tried to push them into the drum of the machine, with the declared 6 kg on the front panel. In case of correct loading, we managed to fit 3 750 g.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT WASHING MACHINE

In washing machines, it is not the number in kilograms that is indicated on the front panel that is important, but the actual volume of the drum. You can ask the store staff just with a tape measure/ruler and measure the diameter of the drum, as well as its depth. On average, 1 kg of laundry for quality washing is about 10 liters of drum volume. That is, if we want to buy a machine for 5 kg, the volume of the drum should be about 50 liters.

For an accurate calculation, you can use a simple formula.

The formula for calculating the washing machine load (in kg):

D*D*H*0.314/4000 = kg

D – drum diameter in cm;

H – drum depth in cm.

For example, the drum diameter is 45 cm and the depth is 30 cm.

Calculations: 45*45*30*0.314/4000 = 4.77 kg

There is no regularity with brands and indicators that are indicated on the machines. Everything is very individual from series to series of each manufacturer. Therefore, if Whirlpool met our expectations – it does not mean that any Whirlpool washing machine will meet the stated figures. It is necessary to consider a specific model and proceed from a specific case.
